The UltraFuels® Advantage

UltraFuels® is a true next generation solution, with designs that are flexible, modular, and simple to maintain. By leveraging industry leading automation, we out perform traditional efficiency metrics while minimizing manpower required for operations and maintenance.

  • Turnkey solution-from conceptual design through operations and maintenance.
  • Run times of three to five years before maintenance outages.
  • Shop constructed and delivered by truck for a seamless setup.
  • High quality, climate controlled.
  • Modular design for ease of assembly and minimal field construction time.

Our design process eliminates any unnecessary equipment and waste, resulting in a super simplified, highly durable, easily maintained refinery. This is the UltraFuels® advantage.

What is the Plus in UltraFuels® Plus?

A 95% reduction in CO2 and Criteria Pollutants.

  • Full CO2 capture on refinery emissions and power generation.
  • Various technology applications to reduce Criteria Pollutants - SOx, NOx, PM.

A Seamless Setup

With the help of our logistics support team, we can strategically place an UltraFuels® refinery in any location that yields a competitive advantage.

At or near production sites, hydraulic fracturing requires significant quantities of diesel to fuel equipment during drilling and completion. In remote locations, this demand can lead to high transportation costs.

At or near transportation hubs, larger facilities can export product via rail, truck, or pipeline.

With all of the design, fabrication, and assembly handled in-house, we can ship an UltraFuels® refinery to your ideal location, and provide turnkey instillation, commissioning, and operation.

Fabrication Process

  • Base skid components laid out on shop floor.
  • Shop fabrication vessels ready for installation of skids.
  • Skids being assembled in the shop, including: equipment, piping, instrumentation.
  • Skids installed in the field.
  • Pre-wired junction boxes on skid ends.

Less Is More

Conventional refinery designs are complicated. The vast majority of U.S. refineries are designed to process heavy foreign crudes. The sheer complexity and amount of equipment involved means that refineries have relatively high operating expenses. Even under ideal operating conditions, refineries for heavier crudes require lots of hydrogen, complicated sulfur removal, and extensive utilities. This also results in a much higher carbon footprint than the UltraFuels® design.

Our UltraFuels® design philosophy is to eliminate over-design in favor of a simpler approach. The result is a system with greater uptime, less maintenance headaches, and a significantly reduced operating cost. Sometimes, less is more.

Conventional Designs:

  • 30-60% gas oil which must be cracked.
  • 5-40% asphalt which must be coked or sold as high sulfur asphalt or fuel oil.
  • Lots of hydrogen required.
  • Complex sulfur removal required.
  • Extensive utilities – cooling towers, boilers, BFW treating, waste water treatment, etc.
  • All products blended.

Complicated, expensive, difficult to maintain.

UltraFuels® Design:

  • Little to no fuel oil.
  • No external hydrogen required.
  • Simple sulfur removal.
  • Minimal blending.
  • Minimal tankage.
  • Minimal utilities.

Simple, efficient, easy to maintain.

Light Condensate Focused

The key to a simple design philosophy is our focus on light condensate feed, or shale. With UltraFuels®, refining is focused on upgrading to finished products:

  1. Gasoline
  2. Diesel
  3. Very low sulfur fuel oil

After separating the crude into one of these three products, the distillate hydrotreater removes sulfur to meet ULSD specifications. The gasoline section removes sulfur and upgrades octane to meet 87 regular and even 93 premium gasoline specifications. Fuel oil meets very low sulfur specifications without future treatment.

Reforming with Lighter Crudes

Older generation refineries have always been optimized for traditional crudes.

  • Reformers to upgrade preponderance of HSR (3.7 MMBPD in the US)
  • Produce High Octane Gasoline, BTX, Hydrogen
  • Accept the yield loss as a side effect, balanced by volume gain in FCC and hydrocracker
  • ISOM Units are rare, due to low LSR content of crudes (0.5 MMBPD in the US)

However, an influx of lighter condensates has shifted the naphtha balance.

  • The lighter the condensate, the higher the ratio of LSR to HSR
  • Relatively high volume of light naphtha is suited to isomerization
  • Relatively low volume of heavy naphtha can be reformed at low severity and corresponding low volume loss

With our integrated approach, we combine isomerization and reforming units into one hydrogen loop. Hydrogen production eliminates the necessity and expense of importing liquid hydrogen and reduces the risk of third-party price control by providing finished 87 octane gasoline product.

What Clients Say About UltraFuels

With vast refining process experience from its partners and a succinct design, Southern Rock Energy Partners has chosen UltraFuels as a strategic partner in the development of its greenfield refinery project. By processing the light, shale crudes, the refinery design reduces capital and operating expenses, water consumption, the real estate footprint, and mostly importantly eliminates emissions including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur oxide.  UltraFuels will advance the refinery industry into the future by providing operating efficiencies and supplying cleaner, higher-octane gasoline and cleaner diesel. Southern Rock Energy Partners and UltraFuels share vision to the future synergies which complement each other.
